70% of Sevastopol winegrowing enterprises are provided with “local” specialists
Since 2019, Sevastopol State University has been training personnel for the main branch of the region’s agro-industrial complex — viticulture and winemaking. Today, 70% of industry enterprises in the city are staffed by specialists trained at the Department of Agricultural Technologies.
An important stage of preparation is practical classes at the educational and scientific site of viticulture and winemaking of Northern State University with an area of 23 hectares, where today students were introduced to the process of pruning vines, which is important for the future harvest.
Students go through planting, caring for, and harvesting their own bush. Last year we collected the first harvest and processed the laboratory product at one of the city’s wineries. Students took part in all operations of the full cycle: from the vine to the glass. Our specialists and students are happy to come here to the university’s training ground. For them, this is practical work and a window into the profession.said the head of the Agrotechnology department, Sergei Tarasenko.
In total, the department currently has 4 bachelor’s courses and 2 master’s courses. At the same time, almost 90% of students remain to work in Sevastopol after training. Already, 2nd, 3rd, 4th year students are working and gaining experience at leading wineries, including Inkerman Vintage Wine Factory LLC, Zolotaya Balka Agrofirm LLC, Akchurina Winery LLC and Legado LLC. For working students, an individual training schedule is provided, allowing them to combine work and study.
The development of the material and technical base of the university keeps pace with the tasks set by the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Market.
All our varieties are certified, which makes it possible to develop towards creating your own seedlings. In the near future, our plans include creating a vaccination complex based on our own seedlings. We have a good palette of technical varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc and autochthonous varieties,” said German Romanov, Deputy Director of the Institute for Urban Development of Northern State University.
The creation of a vaccination center will allow Northern State University to reach a new level of development and solve the problem of providing agriculture with high-quality planting material. The educational and scientific site continues to expand, and new infrastructure facilities are planned to be announced in the future.
The department, together with SevSU, organizes practical classes in the vineyards and wineries of Sevastopol, and also fully supports graduates and young specialists in the agro-industrial complex.
Thus, in 2025, the department for the first time implemented a state support measure to attract young people to the agricultural sector: 4 young specialists with higher education who entered into employment contracts with agricultural enterprises received a one-time payment of 250 thousand rubles. For 2026, 2.5 million rubles have been budgeted for these purposes.
This interaction of education, business and government support allows Sevastopol to preserve winemaking traditions, but also to provide the industry with qualified personnel ready to work with modern technologies.
