8 out of 10 Russians put up a Christmas tree: which one they choose and how they decorate it

Delivery service from stores and restaurants Cooper, together with the research company OnIn, conducted a survey* and found out from Russians how they decorate their homes for the New Year. It turned out that this tradition is supported by the vast majority of respondents. For many, this is a way to create a feeling of celebration in advance, and for others, it is to continue family traditions.

Family ritual

8 out of 10 Russians decorate their home for the New Year every year. More than half of them (54%) are happy to take part in this process. Another quarter (25%) entrust this task to family members, and 18% join this tradition from time to time, depending on their mood. Thus, in most families the custom of decorating the Christmas tree together remains today.

Decorating a Christmas tree for the New Year is not just a routine process for many, but a holiday tradition, as well as a way to spend time together and catch the New Year’s mood. Almost half of the respondents (46%) definitely get together with the whole family for this. For 11%, this ritual is accompanied by New Year’s songs or films, and 9% even create some of the toys with their own hands.

The main thing is the Christmas tree

The key element of holiday decor remains the Christmas tree or fir branches. Artificial trees are chosen by 64% of Russians, but every fifth (20%) prefers to buy a live Christmas tree. Another 12% opt for alternatives — table arrangements, bouquets or wreaths made of fir branches.

Most often, a Christmas tree is put up a few days before the New Year — 44% of respondents do this in families. Another 37% do this in mid-December, and 15% begin preparing for the holiday at the beginning of the month. But there are also those who succumb to the New Year mood before everyone else — 3% of respondents decorate the Christmas tree at the end of November.

Classic versus minimalism

Russians’ preferences in decor vary, but the majority still prefer the classics. Thus, toys of gold, red and green colors are liked by 59% of respondents. Another 43% are going to use modern lighting solutions, such as smart garlands and interactive decor. At the same time, a third (35%) remains faithful to Soviet Christmas tree toys.

Also among the leaders is the minimalist aesthetics of “quiet luxury” — restrained nude shades and natural textures attract 23% of respondents. Almost the same number (22%) choose decorations made from natural materials, and 20% prefer to decorate their home for the New Year with handmade items.

41% will decorate their home with what they have, but the majority (57%) still plan to buy or have already purchased new decorations this year. At the same time, two thirds (66%) of Russians order jewelry from delivery services and marketplaces.

When do they put away the New Year’s decor?

The majority of Russians (80%) remove holiday decorations in January — 40% immediately after the Old New Year, but almost the same number (39%) leave the tree up until the end of January, prolonging the holiday atmosphere. Another 15% wait until they get tired of the decor and remove it in February, while 4% leave everything until spring. And only 1% of respondents part with the Christmas tree on the first of January.

*The survey took place in November 2025, and more than 2,500 users from different cities of Russia took part in it.
