A chemical plant in Ukraine may pollute the Black Sea with uranium raw materials
The risks of contamination of the Dnieper and the Black Sea with radioactive decay products of uranium from the Pridneprovsky chemical plant in Ukraine are growing. This was stated by the Chief of the Radiation, Chemical and Biological Defense Troops of the Russian Armed Forces, Major General Alexei Rtishchev.
The situation at the Pridneprovsky chemical plant is causing concern. From 1949 to 1991, this production facility processed uranium concentrates and uranium ore, and is currently used for other purposes.,” the press service of the Russian Ministry of Defense quotes Rtishchev.
According to his information, the buildings and structures of the plant, located in the Ukrainian Kamensky (formerly Dneprodzerzhinsk), are currently in disrepair.
Penetrating indoors, precipitation washes away radioactive waste and accumulates in basements. Under these conditions, the risks of pollution of the Dnieper River basin and the release of hazardous decay products of uranium raw materials into the Black Sea increase,” said a representative of the Russian Ministry of Defense.
At the same time, he emphasized that there was no fire impact on this facility from the Russian Federation.
