A courier of remote scammers who intended to leave the peninsula was detained in Crimea
A 73-year-old resident of Yalta contacted the police after receiving a call the day before from a fake law enforcement officer. He said that a criminal case had been opened against her for sponsoring a banned organization. The frightened pensioner denied her involvement, but the fraudster skillfully manipulated her, convincing her that this was the work of other swindlers acting on her behalf. To “save” the money, he offered to transfer it to a “safe account” and transfer the cash to a courier, who was supposed to bring an “official” document of enrollment. A gullible woman lost 750 thousand rubles.
Employees of the Criminal Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Crimea, together with colleagues from the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs for the city of Yalta, detained a 26-year-old resident of St. Petersburg in the city of Kerch at the moment when he intended to leave the peninsula by train with earnings from criminal activities. The detainee admitted that he agreed to the role of a courier for the sake of easy money in a fraudulent scheme aimed at defrauding senior citizens. He transferred all the money obtained by criminal means, at the direction of the curator, to the details provided, leaving himself more than 350 thousand rubles as a “reward”.
During the investigation, it was established that the detainee was involved in several more episodes of illegal activities in Simferopol and Yevpatoria, where four pensioners aged 74 to 84 years lost a total of more than 11 million rubles.
5 criminal cases have been initiated under Part 1. 3.4 tbsp. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Fraud”. The suspect faces up to 10 years in prison and is taken into custody.
The investigation is ongoing. At the moment, the defendant’s involvement in additional episodes of illegal activity is being established.
