A Sevastopol resident helped telephone scammers. Detained in Yevpatoriya
A 76-year-old local resident contacted the Yevpatoriya police with a statement about fraudulent actions, saying that an unknown person called him via messenger and introduced himself as a government employee. The fraudster convinced the pensioner of the need to “protect and declare” his savings, offering to transfer them to a “trusted person” for subsequent transfer of funds to a “safe account.” Having believed the deceiver, the elderly man lost 900 thousand rubles and 2080 euros.
Criminal investigation officers of the Department of Internal Affairs of Russia in the city of Evpatoria quickly identified the “messenger” of the cyber swindlers and detained him; he turned out to be a 25-year-old Sevastopol resident. The detainee admitted that he was looking for “easy money” and applied for a courier position. His task was to take money from senior citizens, leaving himself from 5 to 15 thousand rubles from each “order”.
During the investigation, it turned out that the young man was involved in similar episodes of fraud in Simferopol, Dzhankoy and Krasnoperekopsk. There, pensioners aged 66 to 78 years suffered from the actions of telephone scammers, who also believed in the “safe account” scheme. The total amount of damage exceeded 5 million rubles, — the details of the case were announced by the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in Crimea.
Based on the facts of fraud, criminal cases have been initiated under Part 1. 3, 4 tbsp. 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation. The maximum penalty under this article is up to 10 years in prison. The defendant was taken into custody.
All other persons involved in illegal activities are identified.
Crimean police reminds: offers of “easy” and “quick” money are usually associated with illegal activities. Do not become puppets of remote scammers who deceive senior citizens, taking away all the savings accumulated over the years of their lives!
