A student courier was detained in Crimea for helping scammers deceive older people

In Crimea, police officers daily identify accomplices of remote scammers. This time, in the Crimean capital, employees of the criminal investigation department of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs of Simferopol detained an 18-year-old first-year student at one of the city’s universities, who, as it turned out, helped swindlers deceive older people. Four criminal cases have been initiated against the girl under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation “Fraud”.

The victims of deception were four pensioners aged from 76 to 87 years. All of them received a call from an unknown person, introducing himself as a law enforcement officer, and reporting an alleged accident involving their loved ones. Under the pretext of “settling the issue,” the scammers demanded money. The frightened women, wanting to help their relatives, collected all their savings and handed them over to the courier. The total amount of damage amounted to 765 thousand rubles.

It was established that scammers began to use a new scheme: to take money from pensioners, they sent taxi drivers, who then handed over the “parcels” to real accomplices.

The detained student confessed to her crime. She said that she found an advertisement for a “part-time job” in the messenger. After that, a “curator” contacted her, who explained the essence of the work: to collect money from packages delivered to a certain place and time by taxi drivers, and then transfer it to the specified details. For her services, the girl received 10% of each amount— reported the press service of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs in Crimea.

Now the student faces up to six years in prison. She was given a preventive measure in the form of a ban on certain actions. The investigation continues, law enforcement officers are actively working to identify all participants in this criminal scheme.
