A unique operation by Crimean neurosurgeons: removal of a hard-to-reach tumor
Specialists of the neurosurgical department of the State Budgetary Healthcare Institution of the Republic of Crimea “Republican Clinical Hospital named after. N.A. Semashko» for the first time in Crimea performed a unique operation to radically remove a tumor located simultaneously inside the skull, as well as outside and inside the spinal canal (intracranial-intra-extravertebral tumor).
The operation was performed on a 51-year-old Crimean woman. The woman suffered from frequent dizziness and severe headaches. Based on the examination results, the patient was diagnosed with a neoplasm. The tumor was located in a critically dangerous zone — it was fused to the medulla oblongata, where the centers of respiration and heartbeat are located, and also grew over the vertebral artery and its branches.
Surgery in this area carries the highest risks: any careless movement could lead to irreversible damage to vital centers or a major vessel supplying blood to the brain stem— the details of the situation were announced in the press service of the Ministry of Health of the Republic of Crimea.
The intervention was performed by a multidisciplinary team. Surgeons had to not only separate millimeter by millimeter of tumor tissue from the medulla oblongata, but also preserve the main blood flow. Thanks to the use of microsurgical techniques and intraoperative neuromonitoring, doctors controlled their every action, observing the work of the patient’s brain in real time. The operation lasted more than 8 hours and was successful.

At the moment, the patient feels satisfactory, her speech, swallowing and motor activity are completely preserved. The results of histological examination will determine the further tactics of her treatment.
