A veterinary infectious diseases diagnostic laboratory is being built in Sevastopol

CrimeaPRESS reports:

A modern veterinary laboratory with an infectious diseases diagnostic building and a vivarium is being built at 3/1 Fiolentovskoye Shosse as part of the state program “Socio-economic development of the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol.”

The construction of the facility will significantly increase the efficiency of the state veterinary service in preventing the occurrence and laboratory diagnosis of particularly dangerous infectious animal diseases, strengthening the epizootic control system and ensuring the safety of both animals and the population.

To date, the overall construction readiness of the facility is more than 20%. According to Elena Kazandaeva, the chief specialist of the VET department of the State Public Institution State University «EDKS», the stage of monolithic work has already been completed: the main frame of two key buildings has been erected — the veterinary laboratory building and the vivarium. Currently, work is underway to strengthen the brickwork, install retaining walls, concreting the foundation slab, as well as removing utilities — in particular, laying water pipes.

The construction site employs 27 workers and four pieces of large equipment. Construction of the facility is scheduled to be completed at the end of 2026,” said Alexander Rozhkov, project manager of TeplostroyServis LLC.

The laboratory will be equipped with modern equipment and will be able to perform up to 150 studies per shift. Its tasks include diagnostics and research for particularly dangerous infectious diseases of animals, including: African swine fever, highly pathogenic avian influenza, rabies, leukemia, brucellosis, leptospirosis, foot-and-mouth disease and other dangerous diseases, including those common to animals and humans, using PCR and ELISA diagnostic methods.

Parasitological, bacteriological and mycological studies will also be carried out, including animal feed. These laboratory tests will be carried out in Sevastopol, without the need to send samples to other regions.

Today, samples of biological and pathological material from animals for veterinary research have to be sent to laboratories in the Republic of Crimea and the Krasnodar Territory. This increases the diagnostic time and the time of delivery of these samples to laboratories, respectively, the speed of obtaining test results for infectious diseases and the adoption of measures to prevent their spread and elimination.
