Such a number of collection irises, experts note, is the first time Nikitsky Botanical Garden presents:
Purposeful introduction of hybrid, garden or bearded iris in the Nikitsky Botanical Garden — the National Scientific Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences has been carried out since the beginning of the 80s of the last century. The first exhibition composition in the open field was laid in 2005, and 60 varieties were presented on it. This year the Iris Carnival is held in the NBS-NSC for the 18th time, and the guests of the Garden will be able to see 290 varieties! — says the director of the Nikitsky garden, corresponding member. RAS Yuri Plugatar. — Such a luxurious collection — significantly updated and expanded — is presented for the first time. Of course, each re-layout of the exposition in previous years was replenished with new varieties. But such a large-scale replenishment has not yet been. And we have expanded the total area of the exhibition area to 2,000 square meters. It has 15 plants.
It should be noted that the collection includes 290 varieties from three main garden groups, which will ensure the total duration of the exhibition’s flowering up to one and a half months or more (depending on weather conditions).
The iris carnival started on May 12 — experts stopped at this date because mass flowering has already begun, and it’s time to go to the Garden, admire the unsurpassed variety of color palette and the incredible beauty of these amazing flowers.
As the curator of the collection, Candidate of Biological Sciences Irina Ulanovskaya, explains, the varieties presented at the exhibition fully reflect the modern assortment of hybrid iris in all respects: date of creation, types of color, flower shape. The color palette of the Iris × hybrida hort culture. at the present stage of selection, almost all existing ones are available with the exception of pure scarlet and green.
The widest palette of colors just makes it possible to create color compositions (harmonies) of almost all types existing in the theory of coloristics from varieties of hybrid iris.
Most other flowering crops do not have such an opportunity due to the limited color range of flower colors. The exhibition exposition presents varieties with all types (patterns) of flower color, of which the culture has 14 process, which at the time of their creation were «breakthroughs» in achieving certain tasks in the work on the shape or color of the flower. Curtains of the exhibition exposition are designed according to the laws of color harmony, which will reveal to the visitor all the beauty and richness of culture, give the joy of thoughtful contemplation and visual aesthetics.
Each of them has its own name, after reading them, you will be able to imagine in advance the atmosphere into which you will certainly plunge into the carnival. So, curtains are waiting for you: «Ocean», «Flame», «Summer Twilight», «Plikat Star Cluster», «City Lights», «Marc Chagall’s Palette», «Iris», «June Dawns», «Batik». There is also a curtain «History of selection» and a location for photo sessions.
