After the earthquake in Crimea, an aftershock was recorded in the Sea of Azov
An aftershock with a magnitude of 2.1 occurred on the evening of February 2 in the Sea of Azov near the city of Shchelkino. About this RIA Novosti Crimea said Deputy Director of the Institute of Seismology and Geodynamics of Vernadsky Kazan Federal University Marina Bondar.
February 2 at 12:47 in the Sea of Azov there was an earthquake. According to the Eurasian Seismic Center, the magnitude of the earthquake was 4.8. Tremors were recorded at a depth of 10 km, at a distance of 78 kilometers from Kerch and 25 kilometers from Shchelkino.
Yesterday at 21:27 a minor aftershock with a magnitude of 2.1 was recorded; the earthquake had the same source and occurred at a distance of 25 km from Shchelkino. It is now almost impossible to predict any course of seismic activity. Monitoring continuesnoted the seismologist.
Marina Bondar explained that this area is characterized by sluggish seismic activity. On average, one or two earthquakes of low energy occur there per year. According to her, last year there were no earthquakes in this area at all. However, in 1987, about 25 seismic events were recorded in the same source, two of which were noticeable — with an intensity of 4 points.
Previously, director of the Institute of Seismology and Geodynamics of KFU named after V.I. Vernadsky Yuri Volfman reported that the earthquake in the Sea of Azov is associated with fault activity in the seismically dangerous Kerch-Taman zone.
