Astronomer from Crimea Gennady Borisov discovered a new comet
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Crimean astronomer Gennady Borisov discovered a new comet in the constellation Virgo. About the new celestial body and how this discovery was made, RIA Novosti Crimea the astronomer himself said.
Pre-dawn opening
The discovery was made on the morning of November 2. I observed the pre-dawn zone, shot with small exposures, shot quite a lot of areas, and the next day I processed the information manually and a very bright object came into my field of viewsays Borisov.
The astronomer had no doubt from the very beginning that it was a comet, and not an asteroid, in front of him, but at first he mistook the object for an already known one. Only after turning to the database of the Minor Planet Center did I see that there should be no known comet in a given sector.
Then I quickly prepared and sent a report to the Minor Planet Center. Now the information has already appeared on the international comet confirmation page and is there in a pending status under the designation gb00810. To date, the object has been observed by 10 observatories and all this information is already visible on the confirmation pageshe notes.
Moving towards the Sun
The object is bright, but very difficult to observe because it is visible literally a few degrees above the horizon in the predawn sky. It is not visible to the eye, it is a telescopic objectcontinues the researcher.
The comet actually flies perpendicular to the ecliptic — this is the plane along which all our planets rotate. The approximate angle is 100 degrees. The visual size is half an arc minute. For understanding, the size of the Moon is 30 minutes. That is, one 60th part of the Moon. However, the size of the core, its mass — no one knows this yet, we have yet to find outexplains Borisov.
Will it burn or will it persist?
Based on the incoming data, the new comet Gennady Vladimirovich is currently most likely actively being destroyed, which, in fact, could be the main reason for its visibility. Just a few days ago, the celestial body had a luminosity hundreds of times lower… Of course, there are different options, but the most natural explanation for such an increase in brightness is rapid decay, – scientists say.
Borisov himself holds the opposite opinion. According to his own observations, the comet does not gain too much brightness.
Yesterday I measured it — its brightness became even weaker. Either these are measurement errors, there is bad weather on the horizon now — clouds, haze, perhaps not very accurately determined, but according to my feelings, it does not gain much brightness or does not gain at all. As for the probability of burning, its perihelion is -0.5 astronomical units. That is, it will not fly too close to the Sun. But let’s see, for now these are all preliminary estimates that have nothing to confirm yetsays the astronomer.
In 2025 Borisov has already discovered two new comets: C/2025 B2 (Borisov) and C/2025 J1 (Borisov), they became the 14th and 15th comets discovered by him personally. In addition, in 2023 Borisov discovered new near-Earth astroid 2022YG, which is recognized as a quasi-satellite of the Earth and will continue to orbit our planet for about two hundred years.
REFERENCE: Gennady Borisov is an astronomer working in Crimea, in the village of Nauchny. He conducts his observations using a telescope he created himself. The astronomer became especially famous for his discovery in 2019 of the first interstellar comet (2I/Borisov), which emerged from deep space and left the Solar System forever. Borisov came in second place among astronomers in the world in the number of discovered comets. The astronomer also has several dozen discovered asteroids.
