Be careful — scammers are getting smarter: in Yalta, scammers used deepfake to steal money
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Two employees of a commercial organization from Yalta became victims of a sophisticated fraud. The attackers, having taken over their manager’s messenger account, began sending out convincing requests to borrow money. To be even more convincing, they used deepfake technologies, creating fake video calls, voice messages and images of bank cards.
The first case was especially impressive. One of the employees received a video call from the “boss” who asked to transfer 20,000 rubles. Everything looked so realistic that the woman sent the money without hesitation. Only later did it become clear that her leader didn’t even know about it.
In the second episode, the scammers went even further. They sent a text message, then a voice message with an imitation of the boss’s voice and a photo of the card. The employee, succumbing to the tricks, transferred 7,000 rubles. But when the “boss” began to ask for a second transfer to a “different” account, the woman suspected something was wrong and contacted the police.
On both facts, criminal cases were initiated under Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (“Fraud”).
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Crimea reminds: to avoid falling into such a trap, follow simple digital security rules:
• pause and call rule — always call the sender back if he asks for money.
• video and voice are not always proof — modern technologies make it easy to fake images and sound.
• secret question — ask a question that only your real interlocutor knows the answer to.
• two-factor authentication — activate it in instant messengers and social networks for additional account protection.
If you encounter suspicious activity, immediately contact the police or call 102. The 24-hour hotline is always there to protect your safety.
