Crimea does not expect echoes of earthquakes that have become more frequent in Sochi — expert opinion

The earthquakes occurring in the Black Sea near Sochi were not felt on the Crimean Peninsula and are not expected to be felt, Deputy Director of the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences Alexander Volvach told TASS.

In February and March, earthquakes were recorded several times in the Sochi area, their magnitude did not exceed 4.8. The last case was recorded on March 6 with a magnitude of 4.1.

No. It’s more or less local [явление],” Volvach answered the question of whether to expect echoes of the earthquake in Crimea.

He explained that the Crimean peninsula is located in another seismotectonic region of the Black Sea region, so the direct impact of these events on Crimea is unlikely. The scientist clarified that the earthquakes occurring in the Sochi area relate to local seismic activity in the eastern part of the Black Sea and the adjacent Caucasian tectonic zone and are associated with regional faults and redistribution of stress in the earth’s crust in this area.

It was previously reported that the Crimean Astrophysical Observatory has developed a technique for monitoring and predicting seismic phenomena. Scientists evaluate fluctuations in the Earth’s magnetic field in different directions, which makes it possible to obtain more accurate and early data about such phenomena.
