Crimean specialists using minimally invasive technologies removed a huge tumor from a newborn girl
CrimeaPRESS reports:
A complex intervention was carried out on the first day of the child’s life. We are talking about a benign cystic tumor with a volume of about 300 ml, coming from the ovary. This formation created a risk of necrosis and loss of the ovary, and also led to compression of the organs and the inability to absorb nutrition.
The pathology was identified prenatally (during pregnancy): the size of the abdominal mass reached 10 cm. Such a complex case required delivery in the Perinatal Center, where it is possible to provide high-tech care to babies in the first day of life.
After birth, the child underwent an ultrasound of the abdominal organs, which confirmed the presence of a cystic formation emanating from the left ovary and occupying almost the entire volume of the abdominal cavity.
After additional examination and preparation, the newborn girl was operated on. Using minimally invasive techniques (via laparoscopy — through small punctures), the formation was completely removed, while the ovarian tissue was preserved. The intervention was successful.
The operation was performed by pediatric surgeons of the Perinatal Center — Vasily Voropaev, Ksenia Vermenich, Yuno Merzlikina together with the leading gynecologists of the center — Alla Dyshlova, Galina Shevtsova. Anesthesiologists and resuscitators Igor Voznyuk and Irina Islyamova skillfully administered gas anesthesia, thanks to which by the end of the operation the child woke up and was able to breathe on his own.
After stabilization of the condition and repeated additional examination, the child and his mother were discharged home.
Based on the accumulated experience and data from world literature, it can be argued that in the future neither the baby nor her parents will remember what happened. Since such surgical interventions are carried out in the Perinatal Center of Crimea not for the first time, and during control examinations, operating surgeons cannot always find minimal scars from such a large and complex operation,” noted the head of the Perinatal Center of the Russian Clinical Hospital named after. N. A. Semashko Denis Kondratyuk.
Thanks to the constant improvement of the skills of specialists, the development of anesthesiology and methods of caring for newborns, as well as the purchase of modern equipment, more and more children are operated on within the walls of the Perinatal Center every year. The percentage of operations performed minimally invasively on young children is also growing. For example, this operation in 2025 became the hundredth anniversary, and 49 of them were performed using minimally invasive technologies.
