Dear day — March 8: experts expect prices for flowers to rise by 15-20 percent

This year, before March 8, the cost of flowers will increase again by 15-20 percent, the Greenhouses of Russia association expects. Prices are rising due to the need to quickly bring, store and sell large quantities of flowers from abroad. Domestic flower growers are not yet able to fully supply the domestic market with roses and tulips. «Parliamentary newspaper» I found out why flowers become more expensive before the holidays.

Roses and tulips

According to the Greenhouses of Russia association, Russian flower growers supply the market with roses by 40 percent, tulips by 60 percent, and other flowers within three to seven percent. The production volume of roses in Russia in 2025 amounted to 440 million pieces, tulips — 250 million pieces, gerberas — 16 million pieces, chrysanthemums — 8 million pieces, lilies — 2.5 million pieces. “The rest of Russians’ needs for flowers are met through imports, — Yulia Panova, Deputy General Director of the Greenhouses of Russia Association, told the Parliamentary Newspaper.

Thus, domestic flower growers most often grow roses and tulips in greenhouses.

Twenty years ago, when the domestic high-tech production of cut flowers was emerging, these positions were the most attractive in terms of investment and return on investment. Now the payback period for flower projects has increased significantly, but existing enterprises have achieved significant success in mastering the technology for growing these crops, and due to increased productivity, greenhouse complexes operate efficiently,” explained Yulia Panova.

Dear flowers for the holiday

According to the Greenhouses of Russia association, flower sales in the country are increasing annually by three to five percent.

Russians love flowers, and the annual growth in consumption of flower products is estimated at a small three to five percent.added Yulia Panova.

According to her, Russians buy flowers despite all the troubles that our country has had to face in recent years.

The sanctions affected the transportation of flower products, the ability to make direct payments, and a ban was introduced on the supply of planting material to our country. These points prevent significant growth in domestic flower production and complicate import supplies“Yulia Panova listed the difficulties that flower sellers in our country have had to face in recent years.

This is partly why, on the eve of March 8, flower prices rise. Although there are other reasons.

It is necessary to provide the market with several times more flower products than in the usual period, and at the same time in a very short time. This requires significant preparatory work: attracting supernumerary labor, renting reserve warehouse space, ordering additional refrigerated transport for delivering flowers over short and long distances, securing financing for preparations for the holiday using, as a rule, credit funds,” explained Yulia Panova.

Due to the influence of all these factors, flowers usually become more expensive before International Women’s Day on March 8th. And this year will be no exception.

These points influence the increase in the cost of flower products within 15-20 percent on the eve of International Women’s Day. And this happens every year,” warned Yulia Panova.
