Experts: the population of deadly karakurts is growing in Crimea
The population of spiders is rapidly growing on the Crimean peninsula. At the same time, experts record not only increased fertility in local poisonous arthropods, but also the emergence of new species. About this on air radio «Sputnik in Crimea» said Professor of the Department of General Biology and Genetics of the Institute of Biochemical Technologies, Ecology and Pharmacy of the Crimean Federal University. Vernadsky Sergei Ivanov.
Recently, the population of karakurts (a type of spider from the genus of black widows — ed.) has increased significantly, one might even say it has increased like an avalanche. This is due to warming and climate change,” noted Sergei Ivanov.
He explained that previously, black widow spiders were quite rare. Now, a trip to nature will probably result in an encounter with a poisonous arthropod. The favorite habitat of spiders is the steppe, the shores of salt lakes, and vegetation on the beach.
Along with their numbers, the habitat of arthropods is expanding, and dangerous species already prefer to settle closer to people — in cities. Here they choose thickets, ravines, garbage heaps and even the entrances of apartment buildings, the scientist noted.
Earlier at Cape Kazantip, scientists discovered five new species of spiders. Two of them – Euryopis laeta and Phycosoma inornatum – were noticed for the first time not only in this area of the peninsula, but also in the region as a whole. Taking into account the discoveries made, 160 species of spiders are now known from the territory of Kazantip; in total, 605 species of spiders are now recorded on the peninsula. Further research in this direction is planned, the expert concluded.
