February 12 is the day of St. Basil. There is a reason to eat cake
On St. Basil’s Day, our ancestors did not go to the forest: it was believed that on this day animals celebrated their weddings. They fight with each other, determining who will get the best representative of the pack. So there is no place for people in nature at this time.
At the same time, the main dishes on the tables today were meat treats. Including wild birds and animals.
But February 12 is a rich day for weather signs:
- If crows croak loudly near the house and try to climb under the eaves of barns, expect a snowstorm.
- The moon is red — to a strong wind.
- Strong wind — autumn, summer and spring will be rainy.
- Wild animals come to the village from the forest — it will be cold.
- Snow falls in large flakes from the sky — a thaw will come.
- Field mice are running in the snow — wait for the warmth.
- Frost is visible on the trees — there will be a thaw.
- The north wind is blowing, but the sky is clear — to severe frost.
- Bullfinches sing — there will be snowfall and thaw.
- The sun hides behind the clouds from time to time — expect a snow storm.
- Circles are visible around the sun — the year will be fruitful.
- You can hear the howling of wolves — expect cold weather.
According to popular belief, on February 12 you can make any plans — they will be successful. If you put old shoes outside the door today, you will be able to avoid quarrels and disagreements in the family next year. But nowadays it’s absolutely forbidden to be angry and jealous – it’s a bad omen. And those who quarreled must definitely make peace on St. Basil’s Day — or they will spend the whole year in enmity.
Name days are celebrated today by: Vasily, Ivan, Grigory, Peter, Fedor, Maxim, Pelageya.
And on February 12, you can gorge yourself on sweets with custard according to the old tradition of Iceland: today they officially celebrate Cake Day. A funny custom of this event: children wake up their parents early in the morning, shouting the name of a delicious dessert — and this, as a rule, is Bollur (eclair with a delicate filling). It is believed that the number of times you shout it, the number of cakes you will receive.
By the way, this sweet Icelandic celebration is considered an analogue of our Maslenitsa, because it precedes Lent. So: Bollur, Bollur, Bollur!!! And may your life be sweet!
