February 15 — Winter meets Spring today
And today is a holiday! Big. Sretenie (Meeting) is a celebration in which, as often happens in Rus’, two principles are intertwined: pagan and Orthodox. In accordance with the original Slavic tradition, our ancestors believed that on February 15, “face to face” Winter meets Spring. It is today that it is decided who should go forward and who should return. If it gets warmer in the evening, Spring has outdone Winter, and if it gets colder, Winter. And also:
- What the weather is like at Candlemas, so will spring be.
- A thaw on this day means an early and warm spring.
- Snow on Candlemas — spring will be long and rainy.
- The cold came on February 15 — spring will be cold.
- If it snows, the bread will be harvested.
- Quiet and sunny weather means a good flax harvest.
- Drops on Candlemas — for a wheat harvest, windy — for a fruit harvest.
- If on the eve of Candlemas the sky is strewn with stars, then spring will bloom later than usual.
- Clear and calm weather on this day means a good harvest in the fields and swarming of bees.
- Wind is a bad sign.
- Just as the roofs are dripping at Candlemas, there will be an even greater winter.
- Just like eating icicles under the roofs at Candlemas means there will be a good corn harvest.
- If the sun is not visible on this day, expect severe frosts.
As for the beliefs of the Orthodox and the Presentation of the Lord, the legend is as follows:
According to the Holy Scriptures, when Baby Jesus was 40 days old, Mary and Joseph brought him to the temple. Dedicate to God. There they were met by the righteous elder Simeon, one of the most educated people of his time. And according to legend, three hundred years before this event, translating the book of the prophet Isaiah and reading the words “Behold, the Virgin will receive and give birth to a Son,” the saint thought that this was a typo and instead of “Virgin” there should be “Wife.” Simeon decided to correct the text. But the angel of the Lord stopped his hand and promised him that he would not die until he was convinced of the truth of the prophecy. And yes! Simeon lived about 300 years. When the parents brought Jesus to the temple, the elder, at the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, saw in him the Savior of mankind. He took Him in his arms and said: “Now you are releasing Your servant, Master…” — the prediction came true and the elder could die peacefully.
What can’t you do today?
- Work. But this prohibition does not apply to those whose deeds are for the benefit and help of others.
- Drink alcohol.
- Do household chores.
- Swear at someone and swear. If you violate this ban today, you will lose the protection and patronage of the Higher Powers.
Today, one person celebrates his name day, whose name is Vasily. Don’t forget to congratulate!
