February 24 is Blasius Day. Sunshine for spring!
On Blasius Day, people believed, the last three truly cold days of the current winter begin.
This day has a great history: Blasius, according to teaching, is the Hieromartyr Blasius, Bishop of Sebastia, who lived in the city of Sebastia in Asia Minor. Known for his righteous and pious life. With the advent of Christianity in Rus’, the memory of the bishop began to be venerated on February 24. But it just so happened that traditionally, for centuries, on this day our ancestors celebrated the day of the god Veles, the patron saint of livestock. And then… as usual… everything got mixed up. The people accepted the new calendar, but changed it in their own way. Blasius also began to be revered as the patron saint of domestic animals, and February 24 was called the “cow holiday.” On this day they prayed for the animals and took special care of them. True, they believed that fried meat on the table today is fortunate, so such “love” of the owners for many animals ended in death. Only cows were not slaughtered — she was the breadwinner for the whole family.
As for weather signs, then:
- Thaw on February 24 — spring has come, and there will be no more cold days.
- From this day on, the Sun finally turns to spring.
