Four Sevastopol residents are accused of illegally fishing for mullet

The prosecutor’s office of the city of Sevastopol approved a criminal indictment against four men: residents of Sevastopol aged 38, 48 and 61 years and a resident of Simferopol aged 68. They are accused under Part 3 of Art. 256 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation (illegal fishing of aquatic biological resources by means of their mass extermination by a group of persons by prior conspiracy with the infliction of especially large damage).
It was established that on the afternoon of February 27, 2025, in the waters of Kamyshova Bay of the Black Sea in the city of Sevastopol, at berth No. 231, men installed a net for catching mullet. After that, they scooped out the catch with nets, loaded it into prepared boxes and were going to process it in the workshop on the same pier.
The net is a weapon for the mass destruction of aquatic biological resources. In accordance with current legislation, its use in recreational fishing is prohibited.
Thus, the defendants illegally caught over 10 thousand specimens of singil mullet, causing damage to the state in the amount of more than 6.9 million rubles,” the details of the case were announced by the press service of the Sevastopol prosecutor’s office.
Employees of the Service in Sevastopol of the Border Department of the FSB of Russia for the Republic of Crimea detained the violators at the pier and seized the illegal catch.
The investigation was carried out by the department of inquiry and administrative practice of the Federal Security Service of Russia for the Republic of Crimea. The cars, real estate and funds of the accused were seized.
The city prosecutor’s office sent the criminal case with an approved indictment to the Gagarinsky District Court of Sevastopol for consideration on the merits.
In addition, the prosecutor’s office filed a claim to recover the full amount of damage caused from the defendants.
