Fraudsters use data from Rosreestr — how to protect themselves from scammers
Krympress reports:
Fraudsters began to use information from the Rosreestr about real estate of their victims in attacks using social engineering methods. It reports about it RIA Novosti With reference to expert Denis Kaleberg.
Social engineers with targeted attacks began to use information from Rosreestr— said the interlocutor of the agency.
The presence of information about a certain real estate in itself gives a significant point of contact with people. So, scammers are associated with a potential victim and report an urgent check of meters at a specific address — a code from the message is required to confirm. Such a message can come from any service — car sharing, marketplace, supermarket.
Having contacted the victim, scammers force the owner of real estate to dictate the code from SMS — supposedly to confirm the work. However, “the only goal of sending the code is to scare the potential victim” so that the person thinks that “he really informed the important code for fraudsters.”
Then SMS comes allegedly about the entrance to the “public services” or a citizen is asked to call the indicated phone number. Next, the victim is transferred to a “fraud specialist” who is trying to persuade to transfer money to a “safe account” or download malware.
Attackers seek to make their calls and messages as plausible as possible, based on real data on real estate or other property. When a person hears familiar facts about himself, he begins to doubt less and is easier to manipulate, says Anton Nemkin, a member of the State Duma committee on information policy, information technology and communications, federal coordinator of the digital Russia party project.
The main goal of such attacks is to make the victim independently reveal confidential information. Most often these are codes from SMS, login and passwords, as well as installing malicious applications. Fraudsters create an atmosphere of urgency and fear so that a person does not have time to check the reliability of information— said the deputy.
It is very important to understand that state bodies, banks and official services never ask citizens to transfer codes from SMS or install additional according to the call. All such requests are a sure sign of a fraudulent scheme. If there is doubt, it is better to immediately complete the conversation and independently call the organization by the official number, Nemkin recalled.
To protect you, it is necessary to be more attentive to any messages and calls related to property or public services. Citizens should remember: the more personal information a person himself reveals in the public domain, the easier it is to use it to scammers. Therefore, it is important to limit the publication of personal data and develop digital literacy skills in order to recognize the tricks of the attackers in time— concluded the parliamentarian.
