Getting into debt is not a tricky matter: mortgage issuance increased by 10% in a month

In April 2026, banks issued mortgage loans totaling 360 billion rubles. Compared to March, mortgage issuance increased by almost 10%, according to VTB Bank analysts. Compared to April last year, the volume of mortgage issuance increased by 24%.

According to VTB, over the four months of 2026, Russians took out mortgages for the purchase of new buildings and secondary housing in the amount of about 1.4 trillion rubles. This is 55% higher than the figure recorded in January — April 2025.

The issuance of mortgages at VTB in April increased by 15% year-on-year in April. Since the beginning of the year, the bank has issued 22 thousand loans for the purchase of residential real estate in the amount of over 114 billion rubles.

The share of market mortgages increased against the backdrop of easing the Central Bank’s monetary policy and lowering rates, the bank notes. At the end of April, the share of market mortgages in VTB reached 45%. Over the month it increased by 6 percentage points. According to Vice President, Head of VTB Retail Business Products Department Alexey Okhorzin, there has been a revival in demand in the secondary market. Thanks to lower rates, people who have been putting off buying a home for a long time are starting to make deals.
