Give a chance to live: the third donor of stem cells in Crimea received a well -deserved award of the FMBA of Russia
Krympress reports:
We believe that this is a very high reward. It is received by a person who does not spare his time and mental strength to support the donor movement and save people’s lives in various corners of our immense homeland— said Lyudmila Gorelikova.
Alexei Nikulin is 37 years old, since 2016 he is a regular blood donor, and in 2020 he joined the federal register of bone marrow donors. A man comes from the Kaliningrad region, in recent years he has been working in the Kherson region, and blood continues to take blood in the Crimean GBUZ RK “Center for Blood”. In 2024, Alexei was informed that his help was needed — he became a “genetic twin” for one of the small patients. Understanding all the responsibility and importance of this choice, Alexei confirmed his consent to become a bone marrow donor.
The procedure for stem cells took place at the Kirov Research Institute of Hematology and Blood transfusion of the Federal Medical and Biological Agency. Having become a donor, the man gave a chance for a healthy life to a child with a serious illness.
I know very little about the patient. Only the fact that at the time of the transplant of stem cells he was less than a year old. In the procedure for the donation of stem cells, there is nothing terrible or painful, like the usual blood donation, it only lasts about 5 hours and requires several days of preparation. If someone else is needed by my stem cells, I will be happy to re-be the donor of the bone marrow and help you save someone’s life— shared Alexei Nikulin.
Transplantation of bone marrow stem cells is used to treat hematological, cancer and autoimmune diseases. Choosing a bone marrow donor is a difficult task. Its cells should coincide with the patients of the patient at the genetic level. Such “genetic twins” are found on average 1 by 10 thousand people. The more potential donors to be in the federal register of bone marrow donors, the higher the probability of choosing a compatible donor.
To date, more than 3,100 Crimeans are in the federal register of bone marrow donors. Three of them became real donors of stem cells.
Recall that it is possible to voluntarily donate blood and/or enter the federal register of bone marrow donors in the Republic of Crimea in the GBUZ RK “Center of Blood” (Simferopol, Kyiv St., 37), as well as in its branches (Yalta, Sverdlov St., 14; Kerch, Karl Marx St., Saki, Lobozov St., 22; 22; Evpatoria, 22 Victory Ave.), or during the “donor days” by the visiting brigade of the blood center in various municipalities.
