Head of Crimea: “The life of Amet-Khan Sultan is the personification of courage and heroism, fortitude and love for the Motherland”
CrimeaPRESS reports:
Do you know what a battering ram is? This is the highest form of self-sacrifice of the pilot… In ninety cases out of a hundred, this is inevitable death…»
The above quote belongs to the French pilot of the Normandie-Niemen volunteer air regiment, Francois de Joffroy, who fought on the fronts of the Great Patriotic War shoulder to shoulder with Soviet pilots. Among them was twice Hero of the Soviet Union Amet-Khan Sultan. This year we celebrate the 105th anniversary of the birth of our legendary fellow countryman, a native of Alupka.
On May 31, 1942, Amet-Khan Sultan carried out his first aerial ram, shooting down a German Junkers near Yaroslavl. And he remained alive. Francois de Joffre called our ace “the king of the ram.”
A graduate of the Kachin Military Aviation School, Amet-Khan made more than 600 successful combat missions during the war, shooting down 19 enemy aircraft as part of a group and 30 on his own. In the post-war period he became one of the best Soviet test pilots. He took to the skies more than a hundred times on different aircraft. Unfortunately, one of the flights turned out to be fatal…
The life of Amet-Khan Sultan is the personification of the best human qualities: courage and heroism, enormous hard work, fortitude and love for the Motherland.
Eternal glory and eternal memory to a true Hero! – says the commentary of the Head of the Republic.
