How many residents of the Southern Federal District take their pets with them on trips? Survey
Avito Travel and Avito Part-time studied how Russians travel with pets. The survey showed that the majority of residents of the Southern Federal District still leave their pets at home, but every sixth already takes them with them, and the demand for pet sitter and foster care services continues to grow.
Thus, according to a survey by the Avito Travel* service, 47% of residents of the Southern Federal District leave their pets with family, 13% — with friends and acquaintances, 5% — in a pet hotel. 13% of respondents try to take their pets with them.
Among those who leave their pets at home, even while traveling, the majority tries to keep in touch with them: 58% ask about their well-being and mood, 34% ask to send photos and videos, and 22% sometimes call each other via video call. To be a little less bored, 4% install wallpaper on their phone. At the same time, the majority (64%) are sure that during separation both are equally bored.
According to surveyed residents of the Southern Federal District, upon returning home, the majority of pets (73%) behave especially joyfully: the animal wags its tail, rubs, and jumps on its owners when it meets them. The absence of changes in the behavior of pets was noted by 17% of respondents, and another 10% said that the animal pointedly ignores the owners who came home: it does not come when they are called, turns away and avoids contact in every possible way.
With the growth of domestic tourism, animal care services are becoming more in demand. According to Avito Podrabotki, in Russia as a whole, in the 1st quarter of 2026, pet sitters were sought out 1.7 times more often (+72% year-on-year), and the average remuneration offered was 4,729 rubles per shift. Performers began to respond 2.6 times more actively (+161%). Moscow leads in terms of activity growth (+176%), followed by the Nizhny Novgorod region (+147%) and St. Petersburg (+145%).
Pet sitting is a popular part-time position, especially during the holiday season when people go away and look for pet sitting services. Companies are more often looking for temporary workers for such positions, and the number of offers available, including for pensioners, is growing — for example, in Russia as a whole in the first quarter the growth was +49% year-on-year. Such employment is interesting for people of retirement age due to the opportunity to flexibly adjust their time, maintain an active rhythm of life and increase their total income, — comments Sergey Yaskindirector of the Avito Podrabotka service.
Traveling with pets becomes easier. The transport infrastructure is gradually adapting to such trips: there are more opportunities for transporting pets in the cabin, animals can be taken with you on trains and intercity buses, and there are more pet-friendly cafes and restaurants. The tourist housing market also responds to this request. Avito Travel has a filter “Pets allowed”. Currently, the owners of 23% of daily apartments and 47% of country properties located on the platform allow you to stay with your pet. This makes traveling with pets more understandable and convenient for a large audience, — comments Anastasia Bardina, head of the “Attracting Guests” department at Avito Travel.
