In 1944, almost a thousand foreign intelligence agents were arrested in Crimea

After the liberation of the Crimean Peninsula from the German-Romanian occupiers in 1944, Soviet intelligence services arrested 988 agents of foreign intelligence services, 2.7 thousand traitors to the Motherland and punitive forces. Journalists were informed about this by the press service of the Russian Federal Security Service for the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol on the basis of declassified archival data as part of the all-Russian project “Without a Statute of Limitations.”

After the expulsion of the Nazi occupiers from Crimea, state security agencies quickly organized the identification, search and detention of enemy spies and saboteurs, traitors to the Motherland and other criminals. A memo addressed to the People’s Commissar of the NKVD L.P. Beria indicated that from April to June 1944, 57,450 persons were detained, of which 7,833 people were arrested, including 998 agents of foreign intelligence services, 1,261 active collaborators of the Nazi occupiers and 2,707 traitors to the Motherland and punitive forces.the message says.

It is noted that in cooperation with party bodies, the partisan movement and underground groups on the territory of Crimea, the Soviet special services ensured the receipt of important intelligence information, organized thousands of various acts of sabotage behind enemy lines, and created the necessary conditions for the successful liberation of the peninsula by the Red Army in April-May 1944.

The security officers also participated in assessing the damage from the Nazi occupation of the peninsula and ensured control over the restoration of the national economy of Crimea. Thousands of residential buildings and businesses were destroyed, infrastructure, cultural and social facilities were seriously damaged, the damage amounted to several billion rubles.

Archival documents contain information about the preparation and organization of the work of Soviet special services in enemy-occupied territory, participation in the liberation of Crimea from the German-Romanian invaders, and the investigation of crimes of the Nazis and their accomplices against civilians and prisoners of war.
