In Crimea, snow saved crops from destruction
January frosts and snowfalls did not cause damage to fruit and agricultural crops in Crimea, so a decrease in the harvest is not expected in the republic. The only concern for farmers and gardeners now is possible spring frosts. About this RIA Novosti Crimea said the Minister of Agriculture of the Republic Denis Kratyuk. According to the minister, last winter was not abnormal. Moreover, the snow cover saved the plants from freezing and saturated them with moisture. Therefore, there is nothing to worry about for now.
Winter was as it should be. Plants in Crimea survived it in a state of suspended animation. Now flowering is happening at the optimal time. Pruning of all gardens has been completed. The situation is similar for winter crops — snow protected them from freezing. Therefore, we do not see any concerns about yield reductionsaid the minister.
According to him, farmers are most worried about the possible upcoming April frosts. After all, a sharp drop in temperature at this time is often accompanied by risks for gardens.
It’s not the weather that’s dangerous, it’s the diseases
A similar opinion is shared by Lyudmila Radchenko, Candidate of Agricultural Sciences, Deputy Director of the Scientific Research Institute of Agriculture of Crimea. According to the specialist, despite maximum frosts of up to -20 degrees, which were recorded in some areas of the peninsula, crops were not damaged.
The ground was covered with snow. The temperatures were not dangerous — at the level of the tillering node the temperature did not drop below -4 degrees. For barley -9 degrees is considered critical, for wheat -14 degrees,” explained the candidate of sciences.
At the same time, cereals are affected by diseases in Crimea. The specialist identifies two main reasons: weather conditions favorable for infection — warm weather lasting until January and heavy fog in March, as well as untimely cultivation of fields.
Due to prolonged heat, the plants became “overripe” and became vulnerable to disease. Therefore, many fields in Crimea are now infected. And the March weather, which was accompanied by regular fogs and high humidity, also became favorable for infection of fields,” said the deputy director of the Agricultural Research Institute.
According to Lyudmila Radchenko, this season the fields could not be treated with fungicides on time. This process has only begun now, when the wheat development phase is almost complete. According to the specialist, the processing process could be delayed due to strong winds and high humidity.
Another threat to the crop currently remains the weed, adds Radchenko. He also experienced very favorable weather conditions this season, especially the dry autumn.
However, there is no reason to panic. Field crops get sick every year, depending on weather conditions. This year, the recent rains prevented the harvest situation from becoming critical, so the condition of the crops in Crimea can be considered satisfactory, the specialist concluded.
Previously, the Minister of Agriculture of Crimea Denis Kratyuk notedthat the sowing period for Crimea is a “strategic time” when the groundwork for the next year is determined, that is, we are talking about the food security of the republic.
Also Sergey Aksenov reportedthat in Crimea 526 thousand hectares of fields were allocated for sowing winter grains, and spring will sow more than 235 thousand hectares of land.
