In Crimea they intend to implement a special program for bank protection
Frequent storms in Crimea damage the beaches and embankments of the peninsula. To protect and preserve them in the near future, a thorough examination and development of a special state program for bank protection is necessary. This opinion was expressed on air radio «Sputnik in Crimea» Associate Professor of the Department of Tourism, Faculty of Geography, Geoecology and Tourism, Tauride Academy, KFU. Vernadsky Igor Vakhrushev.
In general, the work of the sea is a very dynamic and powerful geomorphological process… This is a complex of various geomorphological negative processes, which boil down to the destruction of land. This is a natural process. Moreover, Crimea in the form of a peninsula juts out into the Black Sea. The southern coast is especially susceptible to the elementshe explained.
In order to use the main beaches of Crimea, which are prone to storms, for tourism and navigation, they resort to the construction of shore protection structures.
But they are getting old. Accordingly, an examination is required, and after the examination — reconstruction, but this is a very complex process, — he thinks.
According to the scientist, the bank fortifications, which were built back in Soviet times, gave the peninsula a certain margin of safety.
In Crimea at the beginning of the 70s there were 560 beaches and 65 beaches in Sevastopol. That is, 625 beaches were exploited due to such activities. Already in 1994, after several years of “management” of Ukraine, the beaches were mostly no longer monitored. And there were already about 500 beaches available for swimming. That is, more than 100 beaches were practically lostsaid the speaker.
The scientist emphasized that it is already necessary to conduct a serious examination of all coastal fortifications in Crimea — the eastern, western, and especially the southern coastal part. And evaluate what condition they are in.
Also, one of the reasons for the destruction of beaches and embankments, according to Vakhrushev, is climate change.
Conditions are changing greatly, and the number of storms is increasing. It is now believed that on average from 8 to 11 storms pass along the Crimean coast per month in the autumn-winter period. Previously, it was a little less — about 5-8… Even concrete breakwaters and large strengthening systems are exposed to the sea and can wear down up to 30 centimeters per yearhe noted.
The specialist clarified that at this time, scientists are partially already working to determine the current energy of waves and sea influences, but all this experience needs to be systematized and brought into a single examination on the coast of Crimea in order to make a timely decision.
This must be some kind of government program, because it is a lot of money. And everything related to the protection of the sea, as a rule, is the activity of the state. Here private capital is simply powerless. If there is such a specific program for protecting the coasts, we can save the Crimean beaches with “little loss”…. Coastal fortifications from the 70s, which are now still living out their days, can be reconstructed and reworked to suit modern conditions — and this will be much cheaper and much more profitable than later, after destruction, creating a new coastal protection network of Crimea,” explained Igor Vakhrushev.
According to the expert, if this is not addressed in the next 10-15 years, then Crimea will begin to very quickly lose its unique beaches due to the increasing activity of the sea.
