In Kerch, the director of a construction company is on trial for a 210 million ruble scam during the repair of the Mithridates staircase

The investigative unit of the Investigation Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs for the Republic of Crimea has completed the investigation of a criminal case against a 62-year-old Muscovite, the general director of a capital construction company. A man is accused of fraud during the restoration of a cultural heritage site in the city of Kerch.

During the investigation, it was established that in 2019 the defendant entered into a contract with a government customer from Crimea to carry out repair, restoration and emergency work to preserve a landmark of federal significance — the “Big and Small Stairs” (mid-19th century, late 19th century), better known as the Mithridates Staircase.

However, instead of taking a responsible approach to fulfilling its contractual obligations, the contractor company committed significant violations during the work process. The reporting documents submitted to the customer included inaccurate information: the actual volume of work performed and the cost of the construction materials used were inflated. At the same time, the facts of the use of natural stone were hidden, which, due to its physical properties, was not suitable for performing the specified type of work.

Thus, by his actions, the accused caused damage to the republican budget in the amount of over 210 million rubles. At the request of the investigation, the court seized his property worth about 290 million rubles.

The fact of the illegal activities of an unscrupulous businessman was revealed by employees of the Department of Economic Security and Anti-Corruption of the Republican Ministry of Internal Affairs, together with colleagues from the Economic Safety and Security Department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia in the city of Kerch in the fall of 2020.

Currently, the materials of the criminal case initiated on the grounds of a crime provided for in Part 4 of Article 159 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, together with the approved indictment, have been sent to the court for consideration on the merits.
