In Sevastopol — spring vaccination and diagnostics of small cattle

The State Veterinary Service of Sevastopol has begun free diagnostic tests of small livestock for tuberculosis and preventive vaccination against leptospirosis. The work covers livestock farms of all forms of ownership and personal subsidiary plots in all settlements of the city.

Today, about 300 farms containing small livestock are registered in the city. Annual research and preventive vaccinations are mandatory in accordance with the veterinary legislation of the Russian Federation and are aimed at protecting public health, preserving the number of animals and ensuring the biological safety of the region’s agro-industrial complex.

Today, specialists held events at a private farm in the village of Ternovka. The sheep and goats underwent an intradermal tuberculin test — the most reliable method for detecting tuberculosis in animals, as well as vaccination against leptospirosis.

Tuberculosis and leptospirosis pose a threat not only to animals, but also to humans. These diseases can be transmitted by eating food from sick animals or by direct contact with them. Tuberculosis is especially insidious — it occurs latently, without visible symptoms, for years. Therefore, regular diagnosis is vital. In Sevastopol, we test the entire population of milk-producing goats for tuberculosis — more than 600 heads twice a year. Vaccination against leptospirosis is carried out annually and forms immunity for a year“, explained the head of the department of anti-epizootic work and treatment and preventive measures of the veterinary department, Mikhail Luchnikov.

In 2025, more than 1,200 studies of small cattle for tuberculosis were carried out in the region and over 1,000 animals were vaccinated against leptospirosis. Similar volumes of work are planned for this year: in spring and autumn.

According to Mikhail Luchnikov, if a positive reaction to tuberculin is detected, the animal is isolated, additional laboratory tests are carried out, and if the diagnosis is confirmed, a quarantine is imposed on the farm, and sick animals are completely removed from the farm.

Thanks to the systematic work of the veterinary service, the territory of Sevastopol maintains its status as free from leptospirosis, tuberculosis and other particularly dangerous infectious diseases of farm animals. Farm owners take a responsible approach to prevention issues — there have been no cases of refusal from research or vaccination.

All results of diagnostic studies, data on vaccination and identification of animals are entered electronically into the “Horriot” component of the Federal State Information System “VetIS”. This information is the basis for the preparation of veterinary accompanying documents necessary for the smooth sale of milk, meat and other livestock products at markets and fairs in Sevastopol.

We remind owners of small livestock: tuberculinization and vaccination are provided free of charge. To organize events on farms, you can send an application to the department of the state veterinary service by phone: +7 (978) 300-95-65.
