In Sevastopol, the State Veterinary Service conducts tests of horses for infectious diseases

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The State Settlement Service of Sevastopol has begun annual planned anti-epizootic measures to prevent dangerous diseases in horses. Specialists visit all farms — from large equestrian clubs to small private farms.

Horses are subject to mandatory diagnosis for diseases such as infectious anemia, glanders, brucellosis, breeding disease, and leptospirosis. In addition, animals are vaccinated annually against anthrax and leptospirosis — infections that pose a threat not only to animals, but also to humans.

Horses are constantly close to people: they participate in competitions, training, and are used for horseback riding. Therefore, regular diagnostic tests and preventive vaccinations are not just a formality, but a necessary biosafety measure. In total, there are more than 500 horses in the city, and each of them will be subjected to research and the necessary vaccinations— the press service of the Government of Sevastopol quotes the head of the veterinary department Nikolai Dmitriv.

Such events are held annually in November and last for two weeks. Veterinary specialists notify owners in advance about the upcoming departure and ask to provide animals for the event.

Particular attention is paid to vaccination against anthrax, an extremely dangerous disease whose spores can persist in the soil for decades, including in old animal burial sites. Humans can become infected by consuming the meat of a sick animal or by contact with spores in the environment. Without timely treatment, the disease is almost always fatal. Vaccination is carried out annually and is provided free of charge.

Today we vaccinate against anthrax and collect blood for laboratory tests for glanders, brucellosis, leptospirosis and other infections. These measures allow you to detect the disease in time and prevent its spread.,” said Olga Markeeva, leading veterinarian of the State Budgetary Institution “Sevvetcenter”.

In addition to veterinary activities, state veterinary service specialists carry out veterinary educational work on the prevention of parasitic and infectious diseases, and also explain the requirements of veterinary legislation and the rules for admitting horses to competitions and transportation.

All vaccinations and tests performed are recorded in the animals’ veterinary passports. For sports horses participating in competitions, a separate document is provided with an expanded list of mandatory vaccinations — including vaccinations against rabies, rhinopneumonia, influenza, tetanus and dermatomycosis. Regular non-competition horses receive basic protection against anthrax and leptospirosis.

For all questions related to preventive vaccinations, diagnostics and maintenance of horses, owners can contact the department of the state veterinary service by phone: +7 (978) 300-95-65.
