In Sevastopol they monitor the movements of the earth’s crust

In Sevastopol, observations of seismic activity to predict earthquakes have been resumed. But to obtain accurate estimates, journalists note «Sevastopol newspaper»will require at least five years of continuous data collection.

At the end of December 2025, a monitoring station for endogenous processes began operating in the Baydar Valley. In the area of the village of Podgornoye, at a depth of more than 10 kilometers, the Laspinsky fault runs through, which makes it possible to monitor the processes of movement of lithospheric plates. To collect data, they use an observation well 600 m deep, drilled in the mid-70s to search for and evaluate groundwater.

Two subsoil monitoring sensors are immersed at a depth of 50 and 200 meters, which take measurements every hour. The results are sent to the information collection center twice a day. Specialists receive information in the form of a text file, which contains the date of measurement, conditional groundwater level, electrical conductivity, water temperature and indicators of external sensors, such as air temperature, atmospheric pressure, humidity.

In Russia, this method of predicting earthquakes has been used since the 80s of the last century: an approaching earthquake may be indicated by a sharp drop or rise in groundwater levels or a change in their electrical conductivity.

According to data received by the Sevastopol information processing center from February 13 to 15, before these dates the groundwater level was decreasing, but then experts noted their increase.

Specifically, now this may indicate that either precipitation has fallen or snow has begun to melt, and the aquifer, accordingly, has begun to replenish. No sharp fluctuations have been noticed so far. Namely, they may indicate an anomaly. From a seismic point of view, everything is fine so far, — Sergei Luzhenetsky, deputy head of the “Territorial Fund of Geological Information” department, reassured.

He also clarified that it is still too early to make any assessments. Specialists need to accumulate a certain amount of data and identify hydrodynamic cycles, as well as anomalies, and this will take them about five years.

In total, there are seven monitoring points for the earth’s crust and seismic activity on the peninsula.
