Investigators of Sevastopol landscaped the territory of the Mass Grave at the height of Gornaya
CrimeaPRESS reports:
On the eve of the 79th anniversary of the liberation of Crimea and Sevastopol from the Nazi invaders and the celebration of Victory Day in the Great Patriotic War, the leadership and employees of the Sevastopol Interdistrict Investigation Department, paying tribute to the heroism of the dead soldiers, landscaped the area adjacent to the mass grave and the monument at Gornaya Hill.
When carrying out work to improve the territory, investigators recalled well-known facts about the exploits of soldiers and officers of the 318th Novorossiysk division.
Historical reference:
In early May 1944, when the units of the Primorsky Army, liberating the Crimean Peninsula from the Nazi invaders, were rapidly advancing on the enemy, approaching Sevastopol and forcing the enemy to the sea, fierce battles unfolded in the area of Gornaya height near Balaklava. The height, clearly visible from all sides, became one of the key approaches to Sapun Gora and Sevastopol. Despite the powerful fortifications of enemy positions, during the bloody battles on May 7-8, 1944, the Gornaya height was taken by the Red Army, which greatly facilitated the assault and capture of Sapun Gora. The fighters of the 318th Novorossiysk named after the All-Russian Central Executive Committee of the Order of Suvorov mountain rifle division especially distinguished themselves in the battles for the mountain height. The soldiers and officers of the division who died here were buried in a mass grave at the very top of Gornaya, a monument was erected over the grave — a 12-meter obelisk, on each of its faces there are memorial plaques with the names of the dead officers and soldiers.
Upon completion of the improvement, the officers of the Investigative Committee laid flowers at the Mass Grave of the fallen soldiers, after a moment of silence in their memory.
