It's official: credit card issuance fell by 30% in January

The United Credit Bureau (UCB) has summed up the lending activity of citizens in January 2023 based on information from creditors who submit data to the Bureau.

In January 2023, banks issued 1.14 million new credit cards with a total limit 90.57 billion rubles. Compared to the previous month, the number of new cards decreased by 30%, and credit limits by 36%. In December 2022, 1.63 million new cards were issued with a total limit of RUB 142.01 billion. The average card limit for the month decreased by 8%: from 87 to 80 thousand rubles.

In terms of issuance of credit cards, the top five included: Moscow — 95.59 thousand cards with a limit of 11.24 billion rubles., Moscow region. — 74.35 thousand cards for 7.22 billion rubles, St. Petersburg — 48.85 thousand cards for 4.74 billion rubles, Krasnodar Territory — 50.67 thousand cards for 3.94 billion rubles. and Sverdlovsk region. — 37.92 thousand cards for 2.96 billion rubles.

The largest card limits were approved in January for residents of Moscow — an average of 118 thousand rubles, St. Petersburg and the Moscow region. — 97 thousand rubles each, Khanty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug — 96 thousand rubles. and Primorsky Krai — 89 thousand rubles. The most modest credit limits (out of the TOP-30 regions in terms of loans) are among residents of the Orenburg region. — 66 thousand rubles.

In all regions of the TOP-30, a drop in the number of new card issuances and the volume of approved limits was recorded. The largest decrease in the volume of credit limits is observed in the Chelyabinsk region: -45% with a decrease in the number of new cards by 29%. The smallest drop in the volume of approved limits is in the Irkutsk region: -29% with a decrease in the number of new credit cards by 31%. The only region in which the average limit on the card increased was the Irkutsk region: + 3%, from 81 to 84 thousand rubles. In other regions, the average limit on cards has decreased, most significantly — in the Chelyabinsk region: -22%, from 89 to 69 thousand rubles.
