Head of the Department of Biochemistry of the Medical Institute of the Crimean Federal University named after V.I. Vernadsky, academician of the Russian Academy of Natural Sciences Konstantin Efetov became the winner of the IV All-Russian People’s Prize «Voice of Heroes» in the «Heroes of Science» category.
In 2025, the researcher deciphered the structure of the pheromone of a dangerous bamboo pest, Martin’s pest, which he had already described earlier. The discovery will make it possible to develop environmentally friendly methods for protecting plantations without the use of toxic pesticides.
These studies can be classified as preventive. We synthesize new substances with insect pheromone properties necessary to combat agricultural pests, in particular those that harm grapes in the Republic of Crimea and bamboo in Southeast Asia. The problem today is that plants are treated with poisons, which, when consumed, enter the human body and cause various diseases. In this regard, we set ourselves the goal of developing biological methods of pest control to reduce the harmful load of pesticides on the human body– the press service of KFU quotes Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Konstantin Efetov.
Along with this, the scientific activity of Konstantin Efetov includes discoveries in molecular oncology: the Crimean scientist proved the existence of altered immunoglobulins in malignant tumors.
We were the first to prove that immunoglobulin molecules change their spatial orientation and rigidity of conformation in malignant tumors, that is, cancer of various localizations. Thus, based on this discovered fact, we are now developing a system that will allow us to suspect the presence or absence of a malignant process in a personadded Konstantin Efetov.
The researcher also paid attention to the field of art history. A significant discovery in the field of painting is the academician’s deciphering of the medical symbolism depicted on the frescoes of the Sistine Chapel by Michelangelo Buonarroti.
The award is held as part of the “Feats” media project with the support of the Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives.
