Magnetic storms are approaching the Earth. And they also promise aurora borealis
Magnetic storms are expected on earth due to the formation of a coronal hole in the Sun. According to the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences, an increased geomagnetic background can trigger the appearance of auroras.
Today, a long series of geomagnetic disturbances is expected to begin due to a coronal hole formed on the Sun. During the day, the speed of the solar wind flowing towards the Earth is expected to increase. Following this, geomagnetic indices should begin to grow— the Laboratory informed.
As scientists clarify, the coronal hole, which is predicted to provoke troubled space weather on Earth, is similar to a giant fault stretching from the south to the north pole of the Sun. The hole is a long-lived formation and a month ago, during the last solar revolution, it was already on the visible side of the disk. At the same time, it did not cause geomagnetic disturbances above the G2 level, astronomers noted.
Since the shape and dimensions of the structure have not changed much, it would not be a big mistake to expect a similar level this time. Models show the possibility of the first storms as early as midnight tonight. If this forecast comes true, then the probability of intense aurora formation today will be quite highexperts predict.
Magnetic storm level G1 may hit the Earth already on the evening of March 13was predicted earlier at the Solar Astronomy Laboratory of the Space Research Institute (IKI) of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
