One of the strongest bursts of activity on the Sun has ended

One of the strongest bursts of solar activity this year, observed at the end of June — beginning of July 2026, has ended. The reason for the increase in activity was the formation of two large groups of sunspots on the Sun — No. 4478 and 4479, the first of which turned out to be the largest this year and the second largest in the last decade– stated on the Laboratory’s website.

During this time, about 140 explosions occurred on the Sun, scientists note. At the same time, the surge in activity followed a mild scenario: in two weeks there were only two outbreaks of the highest score. Now both active centers are driven away by the rotation of the star to its far side and cannot influence the Earth.

Theoretically, groups of sunspots could return to Earth on July 20–21, when the Sun makes half a revolution on its axis, but the chances of this are slim. In the last days before leaving, processes of rapid disintegration were already observed in both areas. Most likely, in two weeks only debris will return to Earth, – experts say.

The day before the Sun renewed two-year record according to the number of solar flares per day, the Laboratory reported. After this event, it was predicted that the fluxes of X-ray radiation from the Sun, which had been increased tenfold over the past week, would decline.
