Poster printing: mistakes to avoid
CrimeaPRESS reports:
A poster is an invitation: it should be noticeable and readable from afar. For this you need high quality poster printing. Let’s look at the most common mistakes, and to avoid them, choose a reliable manufacturer.
Mistake #1. Unreadable composition
Overloading the title with fonts, long captions, and not enough air are a typical problem. Keep the title to 5-8 words, the subtitle short, and the rest in hierarchy. The visual path is simple: the main idea is at the top, the date and site are nearby, contacts are at the bottom.
Mistake #2. Weak contrast and “thin” colors
Light gray text on a pastel background disappears in the distance. For outdoor use, choose pairs with high contrast. Set black text to 100K, without color mixture — this way the letters remain clear. Check the dies on a test print, especially digitally.
Mistake #3. Low photo resolution
The screenshot is not suitable for printing. For A2-A1 formats, you need a source file of 200-300 dpi at a scale of 1:1. If the image is stretched, artifacts will appear. It is better to replace it with a large graphic accent or pattern.
Mistake #4. Wrong format and location
A poster for a shop window and a poster for a stand solve different problems. A3/A2 is triggered indoors, and A1 for outdoors, if the area allows it. Next to the road, use a larger font: the viewing distance is higher. Self-adhesive is suitable for glass; for panels — thick paper 170-200 g/m² or a synthetic base.
Mistake #5. Ignoring environmental conditions
Rain, wind, and sun quickly damage thin paper. For facades, use moisture-resistant materials, lamination or varnish. In the bright sun, some dyes fade, which means it is better to make the palette a little darker, without delicate undertones.
Mistake #6. Games with color profiles
The RGB layout looks different on print. Prepare files in CMYK; if necessary, use Pantone for signature shades. The profiles on large format plotters are different, please ask for a color proof.
Mistake #7. No bleeds or bleed marks
Allow 3 mm overhangs around the perimeter, 5 mm safe zone. Thin frames along the edge are dangerous: the slightest shift in cutting makes them uneven. Keep phone numbers, QR code, date inside the safe field.
Mistake #8. «Silent» call to action
A large CTA is required: buy a ticket, register, call. Make the QR code 15 mm or more, sign next to where it leads. This way the visitor understands what awaits him after scanning.
Mistake #9. Unaccounted for restrictions
Alcohol, medicine, finance — topics with notes and warning font requirements. Place the age signs “6+”, “12+”, “18+” according to the site regulations. This is not a formality, otherwise the poster may be removed.
Mistake #10. Lack of inspection plan
One viewing on the monitor is not enough. Needed: type proof, spell check, approval of address, prices, start time. On the final version, put someone responsible for the fact check.
Common mistakes:
- Poor contrast, small size, overload of fonts.
- Layout in RGB, no bleeds, thin frame at the edge.
- Bad sources, “soapy” photos, overdrawn images.
- Unsuitable paper for outdoor use, lack of moisture protection.
- There is no call to action, an incomprehensible QR, no caption for it.
Materials and technologies: how to choose without mistakes
For interior gluing, coated 130-170 g/m² are suitable. For facades — 170-200 g/m² with lamination, or poster paper with moisture-proofing. Craft is appropriate in eco-style, but requires contrasting graphics. Digital printing covers a small print run in a day, offset is beneficial for large volumes, wide format is suitable for A1/A0, banners, and outdoor posters. If you are planning a long display, consider matte or gloss lamination, anti-scratch for areas with intense contact.
Design that works in the field
Put the date large, the place nearby, the price so that you don’t have to look for it. Photo of a character or object — on the entire sheet. The text is compact, without “water”. Grid alignment helps the view: heading, meaning block, contacts, legal elements. Place your logo in the top third or next to the title, rather than in the bottom corner where it is not visible.
Checklist before printing:
- Format A2/A1, orientation for the placement area.
- CMYK, 300 dpi images, 100K black text.
- Overhang 3 mm, safe zone 5 mm, without thin frames around the edge.
- Paper and protection for environmental conditions, lamination for outdoor display.
- Contrasting CTA, working QR with test on smartphones.
- Legal labels, age category, current contacts.
- Print proof, verification of time, address, prices.
How to measure the effect
Assign a tag: a unique promotional code, UTM in QR, short phone number for this poster. Compile data by location, days of the week, and weather. Collect your next circulation based on results, not feelings.
The right poster keeps the focus on the meaning, is readable from afar, survives the rain, and gives a clear step of action. Avoid the listed mistakes, check the layout on paper, choose materials for the medium and a reliable printing house for printing.
