Russian schools want to reduce the study of foreign languages
The Ministry of Education of the Russian Federation plans to reduce the number of hours for studying a foreign language in grades 5-7 from 510 to 408 hours from September 1, 2026, Alexey Lubkov, rector of the Moscow Pedagogical State University (MPGU), told RIA Novosti.
Starting from the 2026 school year, the Ministry of Education plans to reduce the number of foreign language hours in grades 5-7 from three hours per week to two, that is, the total amount of foreign language will be reduced from 510 to 408 hourssaid the rector.
According to him, this measure is necessary to optimize the load on students and rational redistribution of time.
In grades 8 and 9, a foreign language, as before, will be studied 3 hours a week“, concluded Lubkov.
