Sevastopol is in the top 10 regions concerned about the advance of neural networks

CrimeaPRESS reports:

The results of the CROS National Anxiety Index for the first quarter of 2023 have been published. The study identifies and ranks the anxiety of Russians based on the analysis of the media and social media. By total index[1] The TOP-10 regions in which Russians most of all feared the development of the offensive of neural networks included (in descending order):

  • Moscow
  • Saint Petersburg
  • Novosibirsk region
  • Kaliningrad region
  • Krasnodar region
  • Moscow region
  • Samara Region
  • Republic of Tatarstan
  • Sevastopol

This trend is explained by several factors. For Moscow, this is a general activity in terms of the use of IT services and the risks of “dehumanizing” services and services. For the regions, this is largely an interpretation of the development of artificial intelligence as a technology that replaces jobs, hence the anxiety towards AI.— comments the Director of Media Projects of CROS, the author of the National Anxiety Index of CROS Petr Kiryan.

The study draws attention to the fact that the basis for the anxiety of “The attack of neural networks on humans” was various forecasts about in which professions artificial intelligence and robots will be able to replace humans in the foreseeable future. On March 22, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk, Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, and 1,000 other IT industry professionals issued a letter calling for a six-month moratorium on the development of artificial intelligence systems more powerful than GPT4. According to the authors of the letter, AI can pose serious risks to society and humanity.

The most interesting outcome of the first quarter is the emergence of new anxieties that were not previously recorded at all: PMC Redan and the onset of neural networks. And if in the case of the first one, we can say that this is rather a short-term surge caused by a specific information occasion, then the anxiety of citizens in connection with the onset of neural networks is probably a long-term trend, since they will continue to penetrate our lives more actively. Without going into too much detail, people are alarmed that this is the beginning of the very future that science fiction films predicted, when artificial intelligence could get out of human control.— Andrey Lebedev, director of analytics at CROS and author of the study, reports.

According to the survival index[2] (the most significant indicator that measures the urgency of the problem and the depth of the discussion on it) also one of the leading among Russians for the first time was anxiety around the “Attack of neural networks on a person”. The top 5 included “Movement of the SVO”, “Sabotage on the territory of the Russian Federation”, “Rumors about mobilization”, “Activity of PMC Ryodan”. Topics related to import substitution, namely the shortage of auto parts, are also of concern.

If we do not take the topic of artificial intelligence, then the topics that affect personal well-being and the inner circle of citizens remain significant. This explains both the attention to the news agenda of new media (mobilization), and the concern about rising prices and the risks of a shortage of imports (primarily medicines). Significantly, a group that had not previously generated concerns outside its borders was able to make its concerns general: a shortage of spare parts worries car owners (whether they have it or not), but it is also part of a wider concern about the decline in the reliability of aviation and auto messages due to sanctions— says the author of the study, director of media projects at CROS Peter Kiryan.

  • [1] The total index is the sum of the parameters for the media and social networks, which allows you to evaluate the total audience that read and / or discussed information about a particular anxiety
  • [2] Survival Index — the ratio of the Social Media Index to the Media Index. The parameter demonstrates how the anxiety information agenda in the mass media correlates with its discussion by users on social networks and blogs.
