Sevastopol is one of the main sites of the Winter School of the Floating University 2026

From February 9 to 11, 2026, the site of the Winter School of the Floating University 2026 will operate in Sevastopol on the basis of two federal research centers — MHI and InBYUM.

The Floating University is an all-Russian project aimed at preparing students and young professionals who want to devote their lives to studying the ocean for expeditionary activities. The winter school is the first stage of the annual project cycle, which results in selection for participation in sea expeditions.

This year, the Winter School of the Floating University will take place at 18 sites in different parts of the country. Sevastopol is one of the main sites of the project, bringing together 47 participants from 12 Russian cities: Moscow, St. Petersburg, Vladivostok, Kaliningrad, Krasnodar, Voronezh, Yekaterinburg, Stavropol, Simferopol, Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, Saransk and Sevastopol.

The Sevastopol site offers four scientific and educational tracks: “Bottom sediments and their characteristics as an indicator of the state of marine ecosystems using the example of the Black Sea”, “Instrumental methods for studying the coastal zone of the World Ocean”, “Optical remote sensing of the ocean” and “Radio oceanography”. Participants will become familiar with modern methods of studying bottom sediments and oceanographic methods of working with radionuclides, master the use of hydroacoustic and electromagnetic emitters for mapping the coastal zone, and learn how to work with data from satellite scanners and radiophysical remote sensing methods. The program includes lectures by leading oceanologists in Russia, workshops on determining the carbon content in bottom sediments, data visualization using Python, working with ground penetrating radar and echo sounder, measuring the optical characteristics of sea water, as well as field exercises at the Black Sea hydrophysical subsatellite test site.
