Sevastopol people’s squads celebrated the day of creation of the movement
March 2 in Russia is the Day of Creation of Voluntary People’s Teams. This holiday is dedicated to everyone who voluntarily helps law enforcement agencies maintain public order and the safety of citizens. The history of the movement began in the mid-1950s, when the first detachments began to spontaneously appear at enterprises in Leningrad. The official date of birth of the squads is considered to be March 2, 1959, when a resolution was adopted by the Central Committee of the CPSU and the Council of Ministers of the USSR on the participation of workers in maintaining order.
Today, people’s vigilantes remain indispensable freelance assistants to the police. Their responsibilities include patrolling the streets, participating in preventive activities and ensuring security during mass events. However, behind the dry formulations there is the daily work of people who are ready to devote their free time to protecting the peace of their neighbors. A striking example of such work is the activities of people’s squads in Sevastopol— note the press service of the Government of Sevastopol.
In the Hero City, the movement is actively developing: there are three main organizations, including the regional public organization “Voluntary squad of the city of Sevastopol”, squads “Rubezh” and “Rubezh Sevastopol Defense”. In 2025 alone, 172 vigilantes took a direct part in maintaining order at 44 public events. Thanks to the vigilance of volunteers, 336 street patrols were carried out, which made it possible to stop 326 offenses and solve 2 crimes.
The effectiveness of vigilantes is not limited to patrols. A significant part of the work is carried out at the level of direct contact with residents. During the reporting period, Sevastopol squads organized 588 door-to-door and door-to-door visits, conducted more than a thousand preventive conversations and helped district police officers accept 492 statements and explanations. Volunteers participated in 9 events to search for missing persons, as well as in checking the storage conditions of weapons and monitoring supervised persons. To prevent crimes, over 3 thousand leaflets and propaganda leaflets were distributed among the population.
