Sevastopol’s leading laboratory engineers ensure the environmental safety of the city. How?
The environmental safety of Sevastopol largely depends on the painstaking work of specialists from the chemical analytical laboratory of the state institution Ecocenter. Every day, specialists from the chemical analytical laboratory analyze dozens of environmental samples, providing control over the state of air, soil and water bodies in the region.
One of these specialists is Albina Shamgullina, who has been working in the field of laboratory research for nine years, four of which at the Ecocenter of Sevastopol. Her working day is spent using high-precision instruments that determine the chemical composition of samples with an accuracy of thousandths of a milligram.
I really love my job. Every day I work with modern instruments that help conduct research on samples of atmospheric air, soil and water. I consider my profession important: the timely detection of possible environmental violations directly depends on the efficiency and accuracy of our results, — Albina shared.
The laboratory receives daily samples taken together with inspectors from Sevprirodnadzor in the city. Albina and specialists conduct laboratory tests to determine the content of sulfates, nitrites, chlorides, nitrates, as well as the mass concentration of herbicides and other potentially hazardous substances in the delivered samples. Each laboratory test requires adherence to strict procedures and takes up a significant portion of working time.
Laboratory monitoring is the basis for an objective environmental assessment. Without accurate data, it is impossible to identify the source of pollution, make informed management decisions, or hold violators accountable. The work of laboratory specialists is an invisible but important element of the city’s environmental control system.
