Sevastopol: the neurosurgical department of the Regional Vascular Center received new equipment

Doctors of the neurosurgical department of the Regional Vascular Center of City Hospital No. 1 named after N.I. Pirogov introduced new methods of treating the spine thanks to new equipment purchased from the city budget.

In Sevastopol, about 380 patients a year require surgical treatment of the spine: these are intervertebral hernias, spinal tumors, narrowing of the spinal canal with neurological manifestations. Now, thanks to new equipment, Sevastopol neurosurgeons have expanded the range of techniques for working with such patients.

The endoscopic system allows operations to be performed using TESSYS technology. This is a minimally invasive surgery: the incisions are made small, literally one centimeter, which minimizes blood loss and injury to living tissue. With such operations, postoperative pain is much lower — after a few hours the patient is already on his feet and recovering faster.

Neurosurgeons in Sevastopol have a modern arsenal of surgical techniques and the necessary equipment. At the end of 2025, thanks to the assistance of the governor and government of Sevastopol, we acquired equipment that allows us to remove a herniated intervertebral disc using the endoscopic method. The new technique does not replace the existing range of possibilities, but expands itsays the head of the neurosurgical department, candidate of medical sciences Oleg Malyshev.

Another purchased device allows for conservative treatment of problems associated with the joints of the lumbar, cervical and thoracic spine. The technique of radiofrequency destruction of nerve roots is carried out under local anesthesia. Electrodes are inserted, which burn out part of the nerve, allowing the patient to no longer feel the pain that bothers him.

Such equipment is used in advanced clinics and large orthopedic centers. In Sevastopol, it is available in the neurosurgery department. Of course, the technique is applied taking into account the individual characteristics of the diagnosis and the patient.

Surgeons have already been trained and are actively using new techniques in their work.

Every year, on behalf of Governor Mikhail Razvozhaev, the Government of Sevastopol allocates additional funds from the city budget for the development of high-tech medical care. The purchase of advanced equipment allows us to create conditions in hospitals under which patients do not need to leave for surgery outside of Sevastopol, as they had to do before. As the head of the department, Oleg Malyshev, notes, in recent years the number of patients who are sent for treatment to Moscow or other regions has decreased by 80%. This became possible thanks to the equipment of the hospital and the professionalism of Sevastopol doctors.
