Sevastopol vineyards are preparing for the new season

Sevastopol vineyards are preparing for the new season

Since January, in all vineyards in the region, specialists have been pruning the vines, which directly affects the quality and volume of the future harvest. This stage is especially important in conditions of late spring frosts, characteristic of Sevastopol. Thus, at the winery of Rem Akchurin, pruning began at the end of January.

This is the stage of formation of the future harvest. We leave a certain number of buds, taking into account the risk of spring frosts: a little more buds is like insurance. If there are no frosts, we carry out “green scraping” to normalize the load. Pruning requires manual labor and a deep understanding of the condition of the vine. The age of the bush affects the depth of pruning: old vines with a powerful root system produce richer wine material. But we deliberately limit the yield, focusing on the area of the leaf apparatus — quality is more important than quantityexplained Rem Akchurin.

It takes about a month to process 73 hectares of the farm. After pruning, careful tying to the trellis follows to protect young shoots from damage by machinery.

Today in Sevastopol there are more than 7.5 thousand hectares of vineyards, of which 5 thousand hectares are in fruit-bearing age. The development of the industry directly depends on government support.

From 2014 to 2025, the industry received 3.25 billion rubles in state support. During this period, over 250 million bottles of wine and sparkling wine were produced. Last year, a record 738 million rubles were allocated. In 2026, about 600 million rubles were allocated for the development of the industry. The funds cover the entire cycle: from planting a vineyard to releasing finished products,” noted Deputy Director of the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Market Vasily Makoed.

With the onset of March, winegrowers will move on to the next agrotechnical operations, waiting for warm days to awaken the vines.
