Snow and sub-zero temperatures expected in Crimea for New Year

For the first time since 2017, the Crimean peninsula may celebrate the New Year with snow — it is expected that it will begin in the last days of December, and sub-zero temperatures will help maintain it in the first days of 2026, Tatyana Lyubetskaya, deputy head of the Crimean Department for Hydrometeorology and Environmental Monitoring — Head of the Hydrometeorological Center, told TASS.

Preliminary, 29, 30, 31 [декабря]1 [января] We expect snow from time to time, and sleet on the southern coast of Crimea. The temperature background will fluctuate, tentatively, the coldest nights are expected on December 31 and January 1 — 4-9 degrees below zero. Daytime temperatures will be approximately minus 1-3. That is, we hope to celebrate this New Year — God forbid we make a mistake! — cold, frosty and with snow— said Lyubetskaya.

She clarified that heavy snowfalls on the eve of the New Year or on a holiday night in Crimea have been observed only a few times over the past 35 years: twice in the early 1990s, twice in the early 2000s, and most recently from 2016 to 2017.

The agency’s interlocutor clarified that cold air masses have already begun to gradually penetrate the peninsula: in the coming nights the temperature may drop to minus 10 degrees, during the day it may be around zero, and from December 26 the passage of a frontal section is predicted, which will bring the first snowfalls of the year and winds of up to 15-20 meters per second, in the mountains — up to 30 meters.
