Solar flares may resume by New Year’s holidays

Solar flares may resume by New Year’s holidays

After about two weeks of calm on the Sun, flare activity appears to be resuming. On the left edge of the star, over the past few days there has been a slow emergence of two large active regions into the line of sight from the Earth.— the scientists reported.

According to their calculations, both centers of activity will be in the zone of reliable visibility on the eve of the New Year holidays, December 30-31.

For those who read the phrase “flares will resume” as “magnetic storms will resume,” we have to once again be reminded that magnetic storms are caused by at most one noticeable flare in ten, so even if the fireworks display of flares actually reaches its peak on New Year’s Day, chances are high that it will remain just fireworks,” the Laboratory explains.

However, according to astronomers, plasma emissions towards the Earth are not excluded, and perhaps Russians will celebrate the New Year under flashes of the northern lights.

Number of days with magnetic storms in the outgoing year was the maximum in 10 years, and days with increased geomagnetic background — in twenty years, the Laboratory of Solar Astronomy of the Space Research Institute of the Russian Academy of Sciences previously reported.
