The future of Russian tennis: analysis of trends in the transition of female athletes
The tennis world has observed an interesting trend in recent years — some Russian athletes decide to change their national federation. They also help to monitor the development of such sporting events. reliable bookmakersproviding up-to-date information on transfers and changes in the composition of national teams.
One of the most discussed cases was the transfer of Anastasia Potapova to the flag of the Austrian national team. The athlete did not voice the true reasons for leaving, mentioning that she considers Austria her second home. And in truth, Anastasia lived in the country for 2 years before she waited for the offer to become the first tennis player in Austria. Combining into a holistic picture the opinions of experts and functionaries, including the President of the Russian Tennis Federation Shamil Tarpishchev, we can assume that the transition to the Austrian national team was influenced by several aspects — the opportunity to compete at the 2028 Olympics without strict selection, the least problems with obtaining a visa and the material context that allows her to develop as the main tennis player in the country, whereas in Russia she would remain in 7th place.
Previously, apparently, solely on sporting principles, Kamila Rakhimova and Polina Kudermetova changed their sports citizenship. Now they represent Uzbekistan. Their zeal is solely related to qualifying for the Olympic Games. And if Potapova could still squeeze into the top 6 tennis players in Russia and count on an Olympic quota, then Rakhimova and Kudermetova had noticeably less chances. However, it could not have happened without material support from the Uzbek federation, which became the final determining factor.
Analyzing the situation, we can identify several factors that may influence the continuation of the transition trend. In the first place, of course, it is worth putting the level of financial support for athletes, as well as an agreement providing for penalties for leaving to another federation without approval or payment of a penalty. Approximately according to this principle, negotiations are currently underway on the payment of compensation from Elina Avanesyan, who has recently represented Armenia, to the Russian Tennis Federation. Note: “Failure to fulfill obligations under the sports training agreement.”
Of course, there is room for improvement in the tennis field in terms of improving the quality of the training base and preparation conditions. Well, Russia’s return to international competitions will attract new investments, which will have an impact on competition within the national team, and the expenses of athletes on individual tournaments can at least be compensated.
