“The guy is leaking!”: how schoolboy brothers saved the life of a teenager injured in an accident — a story from Crimea

The accident, which the brothers witnessed, occurred in Yevpatoria on September 13. The guys were not at a loss and provided first aid to the victim. Ilya called an ambulance and the police, and Matvey applied a tourniquet to stop the bleeding. This helped prevent the guy’s condition from deteriorating critically before the doctors arrived. For providing first aid in an accident, seventh-graders were awarded certificates from the Crimean Ministry of Health, inviting them to Simferopol, to the Center for Disaster Medicine and Emergency Medical Care. Well, the guy they saved is still undergoing treatment, but on an outpatient basis.

A responsible and caring future

According to the director of the Crimean Republican Center for Disaster Medicine and Emergency Medical Care, Sergei Olefirenko, these guys set an example of how real men should act.

These two brothers exemplified civic duty and responsibility. They restored to many the belief that the younger generation is not hopeless and indifferent. After all, many will pass by a dying person, thinking that he is drunk. And he may be a respectable citizen who has had a stroke. The guys found themselves in a stressful situation. And if not for their actions, the boy would have remained at least disabled, and in the worst case, he could have died— said Olefirenko, presenting the brothers with certificates from the Minister of Health of the Republic Alexei Natarov.

Tactical training lessons helped the boys navigate the stressful situation. Their father works at the school where they are cadets. According to him, the school and the Center for Disaster Medicine “will collaborate and jointly conduct classes on tactical medicine.”

We didn’t have time to get scared

A little embarrassed by video cameras and questions from journalists, the brothers tell how it all happened:

That evening we were walking the dog, saw mopedists riding, were already getting ready to go home, but then we heard the sound of an impact — we ran to look and saw that the guy had been hit by a car.

Acting according to instructions, the children examined the victim. It turned out that his leg was broken and massive bleeding began.

We ran up to this boy. I turned him over on his side because he was bleeding from his mouth and I needed to stop him from choking. I immediately started calling an ambulance and the police, and my brother ran to get a tourniquetsays Matvey.

And his brother Ilya recalls:

The ambulance took 17 minutes to arrive. I told them the time for applying the tourniquet. They took the victim and left. And we asked his friends to tell their parents about what happened, so that they too would go to the hospital.

— Wasn’t it scary?
So everything happened in a second! There was no time to be afraid. He still flew high. He flew the car about ten meters away. Hit my head on curb yet.
— Do you communicate with the victim?
Yes, we have his phone number, we’ll call him. He’s still undergoing treatment, but he’s fine now, he’s taking off tik-toks. (Laugh).

Knowledge that saves lives

The father of twins from time to time asks them not to become arrogant from the attention of journalists, not to think that they did something too heroic. He works as an instructor at tactical training courses, is a fighter in one of the Bars-Crimea units — he protects his native land and also saves lives. His sons are still thinking about obtaining military specialties in the future.
Alexander, why did you decide to teach your children tactical medicine?

We started teaching tactical medicine to children from the beginning of the Northern Military District, and our club is already 8 years old, I am the foreman there. I maintain order and discipline. Changing clothes, putting on shoes, ensuring all the material conditions are my area of responsibility. My children are always with me — they go to the mountains, can light a fire without matches, and provide first aid. And live without the Internet and gadgets. And this is very important today.

By the way, Alexander (and now his sons) always has a tourniquet in his pocket. Just in case. After all, the main thing is to stop the bleeding so that the person does not “leak out.”
