The main symbols of the New Year for Russians are chimes, sparkling wine and the New Year’s table
On the eve of the most festive night, Pyaterochka conducted a survey among Russians to find out their associations with the New Year. Almost every second person answered that the main symbol for them was the New Year’s table; another 46% of Russians associate the holiday with the chimes and champagne.
Sparkling wines remain the most popular drink on the festive night — they were chosen by more than half of respondents. 23% plan to put strong alcohol on the table, 16% of Russians will buy still wines for the holiday. The remaining respondents are planning to celebrate with non-alcoholic drinks. Sales at Pyaterochka confirm the popularity of sparkling wines. Over the 11 months of 2025, buyers purchased almost 53 million bottles of champagne. At the same time, the share of sales of sparkling wines from the chain’s own brands amounted to 13% of the total volume, and their average rating in the Pyaterochka mobile application reached 4.92 points out of 5 possible.
The main New Year’s dish for Russians will be “Olivier” — 53% of respondents will prepare it; The Russians gave second place to “Herring under a Fur Coat.” 34% of respondents admitted that they would definitely put something hot on the table, and 20% would end the holiday with a piece of cake. At the same time, every tenth Russian does not plan to spend the pre-holiday time on cooking and will order ready-made food for delivery or buy their favorite dishes in the store.
44% of respondents believe that a wish made on New Year’s Eve will definitely come true. Almost 30% of them write a wish for the year on paper, burn it and pour the ashes into a glass of sparkling wine. Another 14% seal the note in a champagne bottle. 55% of respondents admitted that they would not make wishes, since they already have everything.
